Gold-tone and black finishes are both common — black faces with a warm halo are a current favourite for bars and boutique hotels.
If the wall is glass or highly polished stone, a halo can double-glare; in those positions a frontlit or full-lit letter usually behaves better, and we will say so at proof stage rather than sell the wrong construction.
